Pins and Interests
Pinterest is a social media platform that allows users to post with Pins that individuals can find common interest within and share their ideas and creativity. The basis of consumers for Pinterest is slightly different than other platforms with the majority of users being female (%67) and the most common age range being 25-34. Brands can capitalize on Pinterest by using posts varying from aesthetic design to recipe inspiration. Pinterest operates using a home feed that shows the Pins that have been saved by users and which topics and boards they follow to help connect individuals with like-minded people.
Within Pinterest there are three types of Pins that can be utilized to a user or brands advantage. The three types are as follows: Image Pins, Video Pins, and Rich Pins. I will focus on Rich Pins as it is most relevant for a brand's awareness. Rich Pins have allowed information to automatically sync from the parent website of an article, produce or recipe. These are the three main types of Rich Pins used on Pinterest. Recipe Pins are as simple as they sound, they include a title, serving size, cook time, ratings, diet preference and of course the ingredients to the recipe. Article Pins include a description, author and a headline of the article from the parent website. Product Pins are very useful as they allow business accounts to place product pins that enable an on-platform shopping service with pricing, availability, product information and reviews.
Going further down the rabbit hole of Rich Pins, Product Pins have three categories of their own to allow for further and more in depth reach in a specific niche. The three types of Product Pins include: Try on Product Pins, Collections Pins and Carousel Pins. Try on Product Pins allow people to virtually try products similar to a fitting room using a tool within the app called Pinterest Lens that uses augmented reality technology to display the image of a product in real time. Collection Pins are product pins that have been grouped together. Similar to Amazon it shows you an array of products that are related to the main product or merchant. Lastly, Carousel Pins are product pins with multiple images that go more in depth about the product without utilizing the shopping feature to look at the description of products.
Understanding these tools that Pinterest has to build your following and increase reach are crucial in maintaining a presence on Pinterest. Pinterest is unique in its way of advertisement that allows for a far more in depth and niche-positive environment for users and brands alike.
