ONU Homecoming Parade - Live Tweeting
Over the weekend it was homecoming at Ohio Northern University. I was tasked with going to one of the various homecoming events for an assignment in principles of social media that had me live tweet one of those events. During this live tweet session I chose to attend the ONU Homecoming Parade and document the various occurrences at the event.
The parade began at 10:30 a.m. so I left for campus with my girlfriend at around 9:30 a.m. because we live in Elida, Ohio about 45 minutes away from Ada. Once I arrived at campus I sent out a tweet 15 minutes before the parade to let my followers know that I was about to begin live tweeting the event. It took the parade about 20 extra minutes to begin most likely due to people blocking the streets. Once the parade began the sheriffs of Ada along with the Public Safety of ONU lead the way. After the escort, there was the ONU Marching Band which reminded me of my days in the Elida High School Marching Band. A little after the band passed we saw the Lima RTA which was very cool to see driving down the street like it would back in the day. Following the RTA, the various Greek life groups walked down Main Street to represent their respective fraternities and sororities for tradition. I saw a few of my friends on their floats as they cruised down the street and gave us and many others some delicious candy.
As the parade culminated there were only smiles on everyone's faces which was to be expected. This was a very useful tool in teaching me skills that I can use in the future for journalism and actively participating in the online community.
I enjoyed reading your blog this week as I was also live tweeting the homecoming parade. I also thought it was interesting that the parade went off 20 minutes late, I think you are right about people blocking the road. I am glad it was a good experience for you to use in your future in journalism!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like live-tweeting the ONU Homecoming Parade was a fun and valuable experience! Seeing familiar faces and connecting with the event through personal memories, like the marching band, must have made it even more enjoyable. The assignment also helped me build skills in real-time reporting while actively engaging in something else!
ReplyDeleteI also live-tweeted during the parade! It was super fun to support ONU and go to an event with friends. I'm so glad you enjoyed it and I'm super happy that it brought back some good memories for you. And I agree that this assignment definitely taught me some new skills to use in the future.
