Commuter Life on Campus
As a commuter in my junior year at Ohio Northern university, I am not on campus as much as the average student. This leads to a lot of extra pressure for me, not due to the commute but due to my responsibilities outside of building my career. I live in Elida about 40 minutes away from campus and I work at Five Below part-time while being a freelance music producer. For my college career, I have classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m., to 3 p.m, with an hour break at 1 p.m., which I like to call the 'odd days'. For my Tuesdays and Thursdays, the only class I have is from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., which I like to call the 'even days'.
On both my even and odd days, I wake up around 7 a.m. and get myself together to tackle the day. Most days I have to work an hour after class so I don't have much time in the evening to hang out with my girlfriend or play video-games with my friends. On my days in the morning, I get all assignments I may have for the week done and then start to make music in FL Studio before I have to go to class. Even days I am on campus the least as I always plan my schedule for classes to account for assignments and my work schedule.
Odd days are where I get the most career building done. I schedule off work on those days so I can take the evening to study, hang out with my girlfriend and play video-games with my buddies. Oftentimes I use the evenings to study instead of doing assignments as I know I have time to do them in the mornings on my days. During my hour break on my odd days, I like to hang out at my friend's house on campus, who I've been friends with since 4th grade. He is completely free after 11 a.m. on my even days so we enjoy kicking-it and relaxing before my last class of the day.
Juggling all these things gave me a great sense of time-management as I found a way to make time for the things I love outside of my student life as a commuter.
