Getting Acquainted with Social Media
As the end of the semester is only one week of final exams away, it only leaves me with a moment to reflect amidst the chaos of the culmination of the year. The classes I took this year were not very labor intensive, but gave me huge insights into my own understanding of what I want my future career to look like. The main class this year that really helped me find a sense of purpose outside of my major orientation of psychology was principles of social media. Being a producer who has been studying the landscape of producing and the entire industry as a whole on social media, taking this class has confirmed and corrected many beliefs I had about using social media for brand purposes. Learning the actual terminology and the best ways to get myself out there on the platforms best suited for my goals has been an immense help in boosting my musical recognition online.
When first starting out producing I had no idea what I was doing as it was me and a couple of my buddies who were goofing around until we had a full album to drop. This is when I realized that we needed to figure out how to get our name out there for people to listen to our music. I started by posting my music to TikTok, sometimes opting to use the built-in promotion feature to help boost my reach further, but the numbers just weren't what we wanted to see. Fast forward about a year and a half and I decided to take a social media class to help better my understanding of how social media worked.
In this class I have three major takeaways that I will use in my music career for the rest of my life. The first idea is that of consistency. One of the biggest things I have learned from class is that the algorithm craves consistent posting. The simple act of posting multiple times a day during the times that are most active for my specific niche instantly increases my reach as the algorithm does not really do its thing until you are consistently posting. Secondly, terms like engagement and the various vocabulary used help me understand the language of social media. Lastly, the idea of reaching out to other creators has really increased my confidence when it comes to sharing my music with others. Reaching out to people in my niche allows me to solidify myself as my own brand which drastically improves the way people engage with me online.
Overall, this class has been great. The knowledge that I've learned will be applied to my everyday life for the rest of my music career as an independent artist. I know for sure that I want to pursue social media which is why I have decided to lock in my social media minor to help better my understanding and give me more means to reach my goals.
